On May 6th, 2011 members of the Medicine Hat Police Service and Medicine Hat Safe Community Association were in Edmonton, Alberta for the 20th annual Solicitor General and Public Security Crime Prevention Awards ceremony.

Both Medicine Hat groups won awards in the Police-Community Collaboration Category. The Medicine Hat Safe Community Association won for their work with the community to develop educational programs for youth on topics such as the dangers of drugs and alcohol. One such program is Encouraging Positive Informed Choices (EPIC). The EPIC program consists of lesson plans for students in Grades 4,6 and 8 on a variety of topics including, cyber safety and online bullying. EPIC was developed in house by members of the Medicine Hat Police Service Community Safety Unit.

The awards ceremony launched Alberta Crime Prevention Week which runs from May 8-14. This year, the theme continues to be Safe Communities: Common Goals, Common Ground.
