December 21, 2011 –Anti Bullying Awareness Freeze Mob
On December 16, 2011 approximately 50 students from Crescent Heights High School, Medicine Hat High School, and Monsignor McCoy High School, participated in a freeze mob at the Medicine Hat Mall to raise awareness on Anti-Bullying. The students were provided a plain pink t-shirt and asked to write a message on them that they would like to get out to the community, regarding the ongoing issue of Bullying. The students each paid a toonie for their shirt, and the Medicine Hat Safe Community Association (MHSCA) paid for the remainder of the cost.
The MHSCA is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide advice and recommendations on matters relating to the programs and services that the Community Safety Unit of the Medicine Hat Police Service deliver to the community. The function of this ten person association is to solicit input from the community to develop recommendations for programs and services. In consultation with the Service, the MHSCA will evaluate and support existing programs for delivery by the Community Safety Unit as well as develop new programs to support the three program pillars ofSafety by Design, Safe Schools and Safe Communities.
The freeze mob was a huge success and resulted in shoppers turning their heads out of curiosity and taking the time to read the students shirts. The students stood frozen for approximately 5 minutes and did a fantastic job keeping a straight serious face. Many of the kids said it was a great experience and they had a blast. Immediately after the freeze mob the Medicine Hat High School Glee club performed the song “Fix You” by Coldplay to end the event off. A video of the freeze mob is available for viewing on the MHSCA website www.mhsca.ca.
